Digicel could launch mobile service next week

25 Sep 2008

Caribbean-based Digicel Group says it could launch its new mobile network in Fiji next week, taking the fight to Vodafone Fiji which has long enjoyed a monopoly on the provision of cellular services there. The newcomer has waited a long time to enter the domestic mobile market. In July this year the interim government of Fiji issued Digicel Fiji with its mobile operating licence, five months after it was announced the firm had won the right to offer services in competition with Vodafone. The licence was formally awarded by interim Commerce Minister Tom Ricketts and interim Finance Minister Mahendra Chaudhry. At the time Ricketts said Digicel would be issued with its concession once it had paid the licence fee of FJD15.4 million (USD10.25 million).
