Sofia given three-month warning for E-112 failure

22 Sep 2008

Dnevnik writes that the European Commission (EC) has granted Bulgaria a final three month extension to deploy the single European emergency call number 112 across its territory or else risk legal action. The emergency number was due to be deployed at the beginning of 2007 but is currently available in just four areas – Sofia, Burgas, Montana and Ruse. Bulgarian regulators argued that the emergency number will be deployed in Kardjali and Varna by the end of September, fulfilling the country’s commitment to Brussels. Viviane Reding, the EU Commissioner, will visit Bulgaria in November to check on the status of the emergency call system.
