Government calls for comprehensive frequency plan

16 Sep 2008

The Ukrainian cabinet has put its support behind a document which calls for the implementation of a comprehensive programme of efficient radio frequency usage until 2022. According to the country’s Ministry of Transport and Telecommunications, 3G mobile licensing will not be delayed by the proposed programme, despite the fact that the document states that adoption of the programme would be a requisite to allocate government funds to convert Ministry of Defence 2GHz band wireless frequencies for civilian UMTS 3G mobile usage. A spokesperson for the armed forces recently stated that the conversion of 3G frequencies was currently ‘undesirable’; meanwhile, state-run Ukrtelecom remains Ukraine’s sole provider of W-CDMA-based 3G services.
