True pay-TV on the move

3 Sep 2008

Thai full-service telco True Corp’s pay-TV division TrueVisions plans to launch subscription TV programmes on mobile phones by the end of the year under the Move TV brand, reports local newspaper The Nation. Non Ingkutanon, True Corp’s deputy director for broadband services, said mobile pay-TV would initially be available to True’s broadband internet subscribers who also sign up to a TrueVisions package, and would be accessed via True’s public Wi-Fi broadband network. According to TeleGeography’s GlobalComms database, True has deployed more than 4,000 Wi-Fi hotspots, covering at least 50 provinces, and has offered commercial IPTV services since March 2006. The country’s broadband market leader also plans to broadcast TV channels via 3G mobile technology once its cellular division True Move rolls out a W-CDMA/HSPA network. True Move has received government approval for a plan to deploy 650 3G base stations using 800MHz spectrum, but 2100MHz UMTS licences are not expected to be awarded in Thailand until sometime next year.
