Zong reaches five million subscribers

2 Sep 2008

Pakistani news source The Post is reporting that China Mobile subsidiary Zong has reached five million subscribers in its first few months of operation. According to data released by the Pakistan Telecommunications Authority (PTA), Zong claimed 35% of the market between April and July 2008, claiming 495,000 subscribers out of the 1.32 million total sign-ups in Pakistan over the three-month period. The cellco claimed its strong performance was a result of focusing on the needs of customers; ‘Before developing our packages, we conducted considerable research into consumers’ needs and then developed Zong’s packages to meet these needs’ said Zong’s Marketing Director Salman Wassay. According to TeleGeography’s GlobalComms database, CMPak (Zong) was relaunched by China Mobile in April 2008, which has revealed it plans to invest USD800 million in the Pakistani cellco in 2008.
