Telecom Fiji and FINTEL in merger talks

29 Aug 2008

The shareholders of Fiji’s two fixed line operators are holding talks with a view to merging their respective subsidiaries, reports local news service Fijilive. Kanti Tappoo, former board chairman of Amalgamated Telecom Holdings (ATH), parent of Telecom Fiji Ltd (TFL), revealed that discussions are ongoing with Cable & Wireless, 49%-owner of Fiji International Telecommunications Ltd (FINTEL). He stated that it made commercial sense for TFL and FINTEL to merge, but that ‘there are a lot of hurdles at the moment, all of which would have to be subject to regulatory approvals’. The government of Fiji holds a stake in both companies, and Tappoo went on to say: ‘Consultations are proceeding on the Government’s attitude to its shareholding, and further discussions are required with Cable & Wireless.’
