3G spectrum groundwork complete

29 Aug 2008

The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) chairman, Dr. Mohammed Yaseen, has announced that preparations for the introduction of 3G services have been finalised. Speaking at a seminar this week Dr Yaseen said ‘We have the spectrum earmarked, and all the groundwork is completed. The PTA will soon be inviting applications for 3G spectrum auction’; he also noted that the Ministry of IT&T was being consulted on the final procedures for 3G licensing.

Dr. Yaseen also took the opportunity to comment on the current state of the mobile market in Pakistan, claiming the sector enjoyed a growth rate of approximately 40% last year. Mobile subscribers passed the 90 million mark at the end of 2007, adding approximately two million users each month, and the country enjoys coverage of 90% of the population.
