GSM players agree links with RCOM

22 Aug 2008

Indian news source The Business Standard reports that the deadlock between GSM operators and Reliance Communications (RCOM) relating to interconnection for RCOM’s GSM network has been settled. Idea Cellular, Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Ltd (MTNL), Aircel, Tata Communications and Spice Communications agreed terms earlier in the week, and Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd (BSNL) had followed suit. The two remaining operators, Bharti Airtel and Vodafone Essar consented after a meeting with RCOM in the presence of the Telecoms Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) on 21 August, although Nripendra Misra, TRAI chairman, was keen to stress that the regulator ‘did not mediate, we just discussed the matter with them’. The agreement means that legal action will be averted, with previous reports suggesting that had interconnection not been provided by existing GSM players the Telecom Disputes Settlement and Appellate Tribunal (TSDAT) would have become involved in the matter.
