Accra ratifies GT sale to Vodafone

15 Aug 2008

The on-off sale of a 70% stake in government-owned national fixed line operator Ghana Telecom (GT) to the UK’s Vodafone Group took a step forward today when parliament ratified the deal in Accra. The controversial sale is still being contested by the political opposition however, which have called it a ‘sellout’. Alban Bagbin, the leader of the opposition in the National Assembly, told journalists ‘We were looking for the best offer for the country, they [the government] have used their numbers to push it through.’ The sale of a majority stake in loss-making GT for USD900 million was approved by 174 votes to 74. Government sources told AFP that the new shareholder is set to fully take over the running of GT by next Monday. Parliament had to be recalled from the summer recess to ratify the agreement.
