The management of Ukraine’s former monopoly telco Ukrtelecom has revealed plans to more than double the operator’s number of ADSL broadband internet subscribers this year, whilst aiming for a total of 200,000 3G mobile customers by the end of December. To achieve its broadband target the state-run firm would have to increase its user base from an estimated 300,000 at the end of June to around 500,000 in six months. Meanwhile, its 3G service, launched under the Utel brand in November 2007, has seen disappointingly slow subscriber take-up: the latest available figures show it reached 16,400 users at the end of April. At a company AGM, Ukrtelecom’s board also announced the establishment of a subsidiary in Germany.
