BSNL planning rural expansion

Telecom Tiger is reporting that Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd (BSNL) is planning to expand wireless services in the West Bengal region. The state-owned operator has put aside an estimated INR5 billion (USD116 million) for its plans, and is understood to be aiming to double its network infrastructure, increasing its cell sites from the 1,600 currently operating. WiMAX-based services are planned, and are expected to go commercial by 2009. BSNL has also announced that it expects broadband services to increase in popularity in the region, aiming to provide a further 100,000 connections by the end of the current financial year.
