MNP not expected in near future

16 Jul 2008

An investigation by the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) has revealed that the fate of mobile number portability (MNP) is uncertain. Regulator the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) first spoke of its desire to introduce MNP in August 2007, but since then relatively slow progress has been made. ‘The nature of the project is enormous, as it involved some technical and security concerns,’ said a source from the watchdog, before adding: ‘The issue of getting the telecommunications operators to sign up to MNP is a factor as most of them are not willing to disclose their technical know-how. Number portability is not a small business but we will surely attain it; plans are on going.’
