BTC chooses Nortel for wireless network expansion

16 Jul 2008

Bahamas Telephone Company (BTC) has awarded Canadian telecoms equipment provider Nortel Networks a contract for the expansion of its wireless network. The extension, scheduled for completion by the end of 2008, will include Evolved EDGE technology, allowing BTC to accommodate additional voice traffic and offer high-bandwidth and advanced wireless services such as web browsing, streaming video and multimedia messaging. The upgrade of BTC’s TDMA network to GSM will expand coverage, improve reliability and in-building reception and increase connection speeds to a maximum of 1Mbps. Evolved EDGE will serve as a bridge to LTE technology, Nortel said. BTC’s TDMA network is due to be decommissioned in October.
