Government issues mobile licence to Digicel

8 Jul 2008

The interim government of Fiji has issued Digicel Fiji Limited with its mobile operating licence, five months after it was announced the firm had won the right to offer services in direct competition with Vodafone Fiji. The Fiji Times writes that the licence was formally awarded to the newcomer by interim Commerce Minister Tom Ricketts and interim Finance Minister Mahendra Chaudhry.

The government announced its decision to award Digicel a licence on 25 February this year. At the time Tom Ricketts said it would be issued with its concession once it had paid the licence fee of FJD15.4 million (USD10.25 million). Caribbean-based Digicel hopes to launch services before the end of the year.
