Westel becomes Zain, commercial services to arrive this year

4 Jul 2008

Celtel Ghana Holdings, part of the Zain Group, the new owners of cellco Western Telesystems Ghana (WESTEL), has issued a statement to mark its official entry into the country, in which it said ‘Zain intends to make a significant contribution to the growth of the telecommunications sector.’ It went on to say that the company had appointed Philip Sowah as the country manager of the renamed Zain Communications Ghana, and that it intends to roll out commercial services by the end of the year. The company had previously said it was considering plans to roll out EDGE and/or 3G services. On 14 December 2007 the government of Ghana finally completed the agreement to allow Netherlands-based Celtel International, a subsidiary of Kuwaiti telecoms group Zain (formerly MTC Group), to take control of WESTEL, which had received a licence to operate GSM-based mobile services in November 2006. In Africa, Zain operates in 15 sub-Saharan countries via Celtel.
