Zapp’s VoIP WiLL service approved by regulator

18 Jun 2008

Portuguese CDMA-based wireless in the local loop (WiLL) operator Radiomovel (Zapp) has received permission from regulator ANACOM to use its existing 450MHz frequencies to launch VoIP telephony services. Radiomovel plans to add fixed line and nomadic VoIP services to Zapp’s range of fixed-wireless internet access services. ANACOM has allocated Zapp the prefix ‘2’ for fixed network numbers and ‘30’ for nomadic subscribers. Radiomovel, the Portuguese subsidiary of Inquam, launched a CDMA2000 1×450MHz WiLL network in May 2004 based on equipment from Huawei Technologies. The Zapp network is the wireless data portion, which was upgraded in 2005 with CDMA2000 1xEV-DO technology, enabling maximum data transmission speeds of 1.4Mbps (downlink) and 153kbps (uplink).
