Over a million SIM cards deactivated

3 Jun 2008

Cellular operators in Bangladesh have deactivated more than a million unregistered SIM cards after a deadline for registration passed on Sunday. The government introduced legislation last year under which personal details are recorded for all new SIM card purchases in an attempt to shore up security concerns over the use of mobile phones. In addition, all existing unregistered cards had to be registered by the end of May or face deactivation. The deadline had been extended four times to give users sufficient time to act. At one point it had been thought that over three million users could be cut off.
