PTA awards licences for AJK and NA

30 May 2008

The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority has awarded licences at a price of PKR214 million (USD3.2 million) to 14 private companies to operate in Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) and the Northern Areas (NA). The award of long-distance international (LDI), fixed local loop (FLL), wireless local loop (WLL) and Class Value Added Services (CVAS) ends a fixed line monopoly held for more than 30 years by the state-owned Special Communication Organisation. Four concessions to operate wireless networks in AJK and NA were awarded to cellcos Mobilink, Telenor, Warid Telecom, and Ufone in June 2006, with a fifth going to CMPak in August 2007.
