Omantel plans broadband expansion

28 Apr 2008

Incumbent Oman Telecoms (Omantel) has said it will invest OMR10 million (USD26 million) on expanding its broadband network to meet rising demand. CEO Mohammed Al Wohaibi said, ‘The money will go to meeting increasing ADSL demand, which grows at 25% a year,’ adding that France Telecom’s Orange Business Service unit has been engaged as advisor for the infrastructure expansion. The official indicated that 13 new broadband packages would be introduced, and existing customers would see their connection speed increased. ‘We have a target of 75,000 broadband subscribers by end of 2008,’ said Al Wohaibi, who claimed that Omantel currently has 106,000 internet subscribers, of which 29,000 are broadband customers.
