Regulator denies Nexcom extra frequency bands

23 Apr 2008

The Bulgarian telecom regulator, the Communications Regulation Commission (CRC), has refused to allocate additional WiMAX frequencies to Nexcom Bulgaria, writes local daily newspaper Dnevnik a.m. Nexcom had requested the spectrum to aid its switch from fixed to mobile WiMAX technology. The regulator is obliged by law to allocate a bigger spectrum resource only if the operator has met legal obligations: a check reportedly found that Nexcom had coverage of only 15 cities, five fewer than stated in its licence. According to the regulator, Nexcom had 1,109 subscribers as of mid-March, of which 1,015 used services offering speeds in excess of 1Mbps.
