Zon may have to sell off part of TV Cabo network

11 Apr 2008

Portuguese newspaper Diario Economico has reported that Zon Multimedia may be forced to sell part of its TV Cabo cable network as a condition of the national competition authority (AdC) approval of its EUR60 million (USD94.9 million) acquisition of regional cable TV operators, Pluricanal and Bragatel, announced in June 2007. AdC would like Zon to dispose of infrastructure in areas where it would own two identical networks, on the basis that it could hinder competition in the sector. Zon Multimedia, previously a majority owned subsidiary of Portugal Telecom (PT) and known as PT Multimedia, was spun off in November 2007 so PT could comply with regulations requiring it to separate its fixed line and cable operations.
