CMPak becomes Zong

China Mobile Communications Corporation has announced that it has relaunched its Pakistani subsidiary CMPak (formerly Paktel) under the brand name Zong. According to TeleGeography’s GlobalComms database, China Mobile acquired an 88.86% stake in Paktel for USD284 million in cash in February 2007 from Millicom International Cellular (MIC). In May 2007 the Chinese company acquired the outstanding shares in the company from the Arfeen Group (10%) and others to give it 100% control. China Mobile claims to have already invested USD860 million in the Pakistani operator, with a further USD800 million set aside for 2008. At the end of 2007 CMPak had 1.98 million customers, giving it a 2.5% share of the market.
