TeliaSonera to serve Ukrainian telcos, ISPs

13 Mar 2008

Swedish telecoms giant TeliaSonera, which recently set up a point of presence (PoP) in Kiev through its International Carrier division, will launch wholesale internet access and IP carrier services in Ukraine later this year, writes the Kyiv Post. The telco will target Ukrainian telecoms operators, ISPs and cablecos, linking them to global IP networks. There are at least ten Ukrainian providers of wholesale international IP connectivity, including EuroTransTelecom, Datagroup and Ucomline (part of the Farlep-Invest Group), according to Tetiana Popova, chairperson of the Ukrainian Internet Association, who added that the new entrant would not be introducing any new technological advantages to the country; however, she also said its prices would be lower. Glib Vyshlynskiy of market research firm GFK Ukraine said that TeliaSonera’s clients in Ukraine would be small-to-medium sized ISPs, as the major providers had already established their own international gateway facilities. Malin Frenning, senior vice president of TeliaSonera and head of its International Carrier unit, said: ‘The expansion into the eastern European market is an important strategic step in our ambition to become one of the three largest global IP carriers…Our Kiev PoP is a tangible sign of our confidence in the eastern European market.’
