Zon zones in on MVNO market

28 Feb 2008

Portuguese cable and internet operator Zon Multimedia (formerly PT Multimedia) said yesterday that it is in talks with mobile operator Vodafone Portugal with a view to launching mobile virtual network operator (MVNO) services over the UK-owned cellco’s GSM network. In a regulatory filing, Zon said the two companies have reached an ‘agreement to start exclusive negotiations to determine the terms and conditions’ of a potential partnership. The only existing MVNO in Portugal was launched last month by domestic postal company CTT, using the infrastructure of TMN, the mobile unit of Portugal Telecom (PT). Sonaecom, parent of rival Portugese cellco Optimus, has also revealed that it is considering plans to launch an MVNO.

Zon, which was recently spun off from PT, reported that its number of internet customers grew by 13,000 in the fourth quarter of 2007 to 400,000, whilst its telephony users increased by 30,000 to reach 83,000 at year-end.
