Pakistan cellular subscriber growth slows

20 Feb 2008

Latest figures from Pakistani regulator, Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA), show that whilst the domestic mobile market had grown to 78.74 million customers by the end of January 2008, the figure for monthly net additions was 17% down on the January 2007 figure, standing at 1.86 million. The figure is the second lowest growth rate in the Pakistan cellular market for two years, the lowest being 1.52 million recorded in October 2007. The PTA reports that cellular penetration stood at 48.96% by 31 January 2008, 18.5% higher than a year before. Total cellular subscriptions reached 78.7 million with Egyptian owned Mobilink continuing to dominate the market with 30.89 million customers, although its position has been steadily eroded by Belgian owned Telenor Pakistan and market newcomer Paktel owned by China Communication Corp, since February 2006.
