TeliaSonera Finland to switch 53,000 subscribers to wireless

19 Feb 2008

TeliaSonera Finland will switch 53,000 fixed line subscribers living in sparsely populated areas of the country to wireless connections, as part of an ongoing plan to replace fixed lines in rural areas with wireless broadband services. TeliaSonera will migrate subscribers to wireless voice services within a year and then to wireless broadband by the end of 2009, once 100% population coverage has been achieved. Newsroom Finland reports that Finnish communications minister Suvi Linden has asked TeliaSonera to guarantee services to those subscribers in the effected areas. TeliaSonera senior vice president Juha-Pekka Weckstrom said ‘Our fixed network services will naturally continue to function normally until everything is ready for the migration to wireless services.’
