Telcel launches 3G

Mexico’s largest wireless network operator by subscribers, America Movil’s Telcel, has launched its combined UMTS/HSDPA network in four cities. The network will be rolled out to an additional nine cities in the first phase of development. According to 3G Americas, a wireless trade organisation representing the GSM family of technologies in the Americas, there were 20 million UMTS/HSDPA subscriptions at the end of 2007. Across Latin America and the Caribbean, a total of 17 operators have commercially launched UMTS/HSDPA in ten countries.
