GrameenPhone’s fibre-optic upgrade on track

30 Jan 2008

Bangladesh GSM mobile operator GrameenPhone has begun upgrading the capacity of the 2,000km fibre-optic network that it leases from Bangladesh Railway (BR). In the first phase of the project, 628km of fibre-optics will be replaced along four different routes, to support the transmission network requirements of both GrameenPhone and BR. The project envisages upgrading a total of around 1,600km of infrastructure from a composite network incorporating single-pair fibre to a 24-pair fibre/ten-pair copper cable network.
