Telekom Austria Group releases year-end subscriber figures

Former monopoly Telekom Austria Group (TKG) has announced its latest customer figures in the fixed and mobile sectors, as at 31 December 2007. In 2007 the decline in the domestic fixed line arena continued, with 2.4 million access lines at the end of 2007, compared to 2.6 million twelve months earlier. In the competitive broadband segment, TKG reported 28,600 net xDSL additions in 4Q 2007 to reach 750,700 at the year-end, of which 665,200 were retail and 85,500 wholesale (571,300 and 122,300 respectively at end-2006).

TKG’s domestic cellco mobilkom Austria expanded its subscriber base by 9.1% to 3.96 million customers in 2007, increasing its market share to 40.3% by the end of the year, compared to 38.7% a year earlier. Austria’s mobile penetration rate stood at 118.3% at 31 December 2007. In neighbouring Liechtenstein, mobilkom reported a 12.5% increase in customers during the course of 2007, from 4,800 to 5,400, representing an 18.4% market share at end-20. Bulgarian subsidiary Mobiltel (MTel) added 830,700 subscribers in 2007 to reach just under 5.1 million by the end of the year. During the same period the market share of Mobiltel decreased due to strong competition, from 52.5% at the end of 2006 to 50.3% at the end of 2007.

Croatian subsidiary VIPnet and Slovenian cellco Si.mobil also reported healthy growth during 2007, increasing their customer bases by 35.3% and 28.5% respectively. VIPnet reported 2.18 million subscribers at 31 December 2007, while Si.mobil had 497,300.

TKG’s new acquisition, MDC, which it consolidated from 3 October 2007, is the second largest cellco in Belarus and had 3.06 million customers at year-end 2007, 23% more than at the end of 2006, and representing a market share of 43.4%.
