Regulator reports more than five million fixed and mobile users

14 Jan 2008

According to ART, Cameroon’s telecoms regulator, more than five million people had access to fixed and mobile telephony at the end of December 2007. Of the total, wireless subscribers to MTN Cameroon and Orange Cameroun account for more than 95%, with the state-owned fixed line operator Cameroon Telecommunications (CAMTEL) claiming the remainder. ART director Jean-Louis Beh Mengue said ‘the migration to 8-digit numbers six months ago opened new prospects for the development of telecommunications in Cameroon.’ The new numbering scheme, which has a capacity of 80 million lines, is expected to remain operational until 2030. The watchdog also hinted that it was considering increasing the number of operators, particularly in the mobile sector.
