COAI: GSM base jumps 62% in 2007

According to figures released by the Cellular Operators Association of India (COAI), the Indian GSM subscriber base grew 62% in 2007 from 105.4 million to 171.8 million. Cellcos added 66.4 million new users during the twelve-month period, compared with 46.9 million in 2006. During December 2007 5.7 million new users were added, marginally lower than the 6.1 million added the previous month. Bharti Airtel added the highest number of new subscribers during December, at 2.2 million new users, taking its total to 55 million. Vodafone Essar added 1.3 million subscribers (to 39.8 million) while state-owned Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd (BSNL) added 760,000 (to 32.7 million).
