PTA terminates Pakcom licence

The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has terminated the licence of Pakcom (Instaphone) following its repeated failure to pay for its concession renewal on 19 April 2005. On that date the cellco’s licence was renewed for 15 years at a price of USD291 million, payable in instalments, and despite the PTA granting Pakcom additional time to pay on more than one occasion the watchdog’s patience has finally run out. According to TeleGeography’s GlobalComms database, at the end of December 2007 Pakcom accounted for barely 0.65% of the country’s rapidly expanding mobile customer base.
