3 Jan 2008

The state agency for promoting private investment, ProInversion, revealed in a statement that mobile operator Movistar has won a concession to provide 900MHz fixed wireless services. Under the terms of the 20-year licence, the Telefonica-owned cellco is expected to provide fixed wireless and mobile services in Lima and the Callao province in the 894MHz to 899MHz frequency band, and to the rest of the country in the 894MHz to 902MHz and 939MHz to 947MHz bands. Movistar says it will deploy 350,000 lines in Lima and Callao and a similar number in the provinces over a four-year period.

Meanwhile, on 27 December ProInversion postponed until 9 January the auction for a fixed wireless licence in the 450MHz spectrum band. For the 450MHz band the prequalified operators are Telmex Peru, Movistar and the STM-Valtron consortium. The winner will offer services in the Lima and Callao provinces in the 452.5MHZ to 457.5MHz and 462.5MHz to 467.5MHz frequency bands.
