Celtel Uganda completes network upgrade and targets two million users

3 Jan 2008

Following a USD80 million network upgrade in 2007 Celtel Uganda hopes to reach two million subscribers by the end of 2008, having finished 2007 with 1.5 million users. Over 60 new sites have been added to the Celtel network, while existing sites especially in towns and cities received signal boosts from 900MHz to 1800Mhz. Two more network switches were also added, taking the cellco’s capacity to four million, up from one million. According to TeleGeography’s GlobalComms database, Celtel Uganda was the country’s second largest cellco by subscribers at the end of September 2007 with a 25.5% market share, sandwiched between MTN Uganda (53.2%) and Uganda Telecom (21.3%). All three cellcos will face fresh competition in 2008 following the award of a wireless licence to Saudi-based HITS Telecom in March 2007 and India’s Reliance Communications in December 2007.
