RanksTel joins the ranks of Dhaka telcos

19 Dec 2007

Ranks Telecom (RanksTel) yesterday launched fixed line services in Dhaka, with the WiLL operator announcing that it will bring the whole city under its coverage within the next three months. RanksTel won its Dhaka fixed line licence in August alongside Dhaka Phone and Square Informatrix, with National TeleCom (NationalPhone) joining them the following month. Dhaka Phone was the first to launch in the city in late September, providing its dwellers with the first landline alternative to state-owned Bangladesh Telegraph & Telephone Board (BTTB).

According to TeleGeography’s GlobalComms database, RanksTel, part of the domestic Ranges Group, launched CDMA2000-based WiLL services in September 2005, signed up around 50,000 fixed line telephony subscribers by the end of 2006, mostly in the Sylhet (northeast) and Chittagong (southeast) areas, and increased its customer base to around 100,000 by August 2007. At the launch of its Dhaka PSTN service, the operator said its networks covered more than 34 districts across the country; it expects to reach 300,000 subscribers by the end of 2008. RanksTel is offering businesses and consumers in the capital a choice of five pre- and post-paid telephony packages plus the option of a monthly internet subscription.
