Cellcos plead for more time to re-register users

11 Dec 2007

Bangladesh’s mobile phone operators have asked the Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC) to extend a deadline for re-registration of their users, fearing that millions of customers could have their phones cut off at the beginning of next week, reports local paper The Daily Star. The deadline is 16 December, and the regulator has said it will order the lines of those who have not re-registered to be closed. However the mobile operators say the process is proving complex, especially in rural areas where many customers lack the necessary documentation, and made more difficult by the effects of natural disasters. Administration activities in south-western areas were halted by the recent devastating cyclone, which followed a series of floods earlier in the year. The BTRC earlier issued an order to GrameenPhone, AKTEL, Banglalink, CityCell and Teletalk to re-register customers who were signed up before 28 February 2006, a total of ten million people, according to the companies. The watchdog’s original deadline, 16 October, expired with only 25% of applicable users coming forward.
