O2 Ireland to jump on fixed line, broadband bandwagon

Telefonica of Spain, the parent company of Irish mobile operator O2 Ireland, is considering plans to make acquisitions in the Republic’s fixed line and broadband segments in order to expand its operational footprint there. According to Thomson Financial, 02 managing director Peter Erskine is quoted as saying that the company is ‘analysing opportunities to diversify’ and increase its broadband services across Europe. It hopes to use the success of its O2 Czech Republic operation as a blueprint for a foray into the Irish fixed line market.
