UTL launches 3G network in time for Commonwealth Conference

27 Nov 2007

Alcatel-Lucent has announced that it successfully deployed an UMTS/HSPA network for Uganda Telecom Ltd (UTL), in time for the Summit of Head of States of the Commonwealth, which is taking place in Uganda. The new network is seamlessly integrated with UTL’s existing GSM/EDGE-based network. As announced earlier this year, UTL chose Alcatel-Lucent for the extension of its GSM/EDGE mobile network and for the deployment of the first UMTS/HSPA network in Uganda, one of the first such deployments in the East Africa region. ‘Our objective in developing a 3G network was an improved end-user experience with high-quality, mobile voice and mobile high-speed broadband data services such as video streaming, access to corporate e-mail and intranets,’ said Abdulbaset Elazzabi, Managing Director of UTL.
