Fiji’s telcos agree sector liberalisation pact

Following four days of formal negotiations, Fiji’s interim government says it has agreed terms with the country’s monopoly telecoms operators concerning a deal to deregulate the industry. The interim Minister for Communications Taito Waradi and the interim Attorney-General Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum met with officials of Telecom Fiji Limited, Vodafone Fiji Limited, Fiji International Telecommunications Limited (FINTEL) and Amalgamated Telecom Holdings Limited (ATH) to hammer out the terms and conditions for liberalising the market and ushering in fresh competition. The process was facilitated by mediators appointed by the World Bank. The interim Cabinet and the appropriate boards still need to rubber stamp the agreement but the Department of Information is confident that all parties are working towards ‘a productive and collaborative conclusion’.
