State-owned Ukrtelecom, which launched Ukraine’s first W-CDMA mobile network at the start of this month, has signed a national roaming deal with GSM network operator Ukrainian Radio Systems (BeeLine). The unilateral agreement gives users of Ukrtelecom’s Utel 3G service roaming access to BeeLine’s 900MHz/1800MHz network which covers 88% of the population. The GSM provider, wholly owned by Russia’s Vimpelcom, plans to expand population coverage to 90% by the end of the year. Ukrtelecom has UMTS coverage of the country’s six largest cities: Kiev, Kharkiv, Dnepropetrovsk, Donetsk, Odessa and Lviv.
