Kyivstar retains leading position, says parent

29 Oct 2007

In the third quarter of 2007 Kyivstar signed up 36% of all new mobile subscribers in Ukraine, retaining its leading position with 43% of the market, according to Trond Moe, spokesperson for the cellco’s majority shareholder Telenor. Despite owning 56.5% of Kyivstar’s equity, the Norwegian group has stopped reporting financial and operating figures for its Ukrainian subsidiary due to a boardroom dispute with fellow shareholder Alfa Group of Russia. According to Moe, Kyivstar’s closest rival, Russian-owned MTS Ukraine (formerly UMC), took only a 4% share of new signings in the three months to the end of September 2007, causing its market share to decline to 37%, to the gain of smaller operators, primarily Astelit, controlled by Turkcell.
