GrameenPhone tops 15 million subscribers mark

Bangladeshi mobile operator GrameenPhone has signed up its 15 millionth user and announced a further USD30 million loan with a consortium of local banks – Agrani Bank, Bank Asia, Citibank N.A., IDCOL, IFIC Bank, Jamuna Bank, National Bank, Pubali Bank, SABINCO, Sonali Bank, Standard Bank, Standard Chartered Bank, Trust Bank, The City Bank, United Commercial Bank and Uttara Bank – for additional network expansion works. Since it launched in 1997 the cellco has achieved mobile network coverage of close to 98% of the population. It has also upgraded its GSM infrastructure with GPRS/EDGE capability and claims three million users regularly take the advanced service.
