ComReg reports telecoms growth, includes Hutchison for first time

10 Sep 2007

Telecoms regulator ComReg has released its report on the sector for the second quarter of 2007. According to the watchdog, market revenues grew 6.6% year-on-year to EUR 1.13 billion (USD1.56 billion) in the three months to end-June. Total call traffic increased marginally to 4.48 billion minutes, with mobile traffic up 22% to 2.13 billion minutes and fixed line minutes down 9% to 2.35 billion. The mobile market finished the quarter with 4.8 million subscribers, with cellular penetration rising to 114%, up by two percentage points quarter-on-quarter, according to the report. For the first time ComReg published statistics for Hong Kong-owned mobile operator Hutchison 3G Ireland (3), claiming the Hutchison Whampoa subsidiary had 134,000 subscribers at the end of June 2007, and just 2.8% of the EUR509 million turnover shared by the country’s cellcos in the quarter. Vodafone accounted for 45.3% of wireless revenues, whilst O2 took 33.8% and Meteor 18.1%. In the internet market, ComReg said Ireland had 1.1 million internet users by mid-2007, of which 63% took broadband services (including 45,000 ‘mobile broadband’ users).
