Portugal Telecom (PT), which launched triple-play fixed line, internet and TV services in June, says it is aiming to sign up 30,000 users of the ‘Meo’ service by the end of this year, and expects the total to rise to 100,000 by end-2008. A spokesperson for the telco’s fixed line unit PT Comunicacoes added that Meo has so far gained 4,000 customers plus another 20,000 requests for installation. The triple-play service is initially available in Lisbon, Porto and Castelo Branco, and PT aims to expand coverage nationwide by end-2007; it estimates that around 40% of all homes will be able to access it by that date. In related news, another PT Group company, TV Cabo, has announced plans to launch a 100Mbps cable broadband internet service, but says that it will only launch it after the completion of the planned spin-off of parent company PT Multimedia from PT. In early August Portuguese regulators rejected PT’s proposed terms to spin off its 60% stake in PT Multimedia.
