UPC Czech completes integration of Karneval

5 Sep 2007

Czech cable company UPC Czech Republic, part of the US Liberty Global group, has completed the integration of Karneval Media into its operations, finishing a process it began at the start of the year. According to TeleGeography’s GlobalComms database, in August 2006 Liberty Global agreed terms to buy Karneval Media from Betbari Holding of the Netherlands for EUR322.5 million (USD415 million). The acquisition was expected to close as early as end-October, but underwent a lengthy investigation by the Czech Office for the Protection of Competition (UOHS) before receiving official approval.

The country’s second largest cable operator, Karneval Media was formed in 2003 after UOHS approved the merger of the country’s then second largest operator, Intercable, with the third largest, TES Media. Karneval offers cable TV and high speed internet access to residential customers and at the time of the deal served around 253,000 cable TV customers and 57,000 broadband users.
