Alcatel-Lucent announces double deal

24 Aug 2007

Alcatel-Lucent has announced that it has signed a contract with Uganda Telecom for the extension of its GSM/EDGE mobile network and for the deployment of the first UMTS/HSPA network in Uganda. The country’s first 3G network will be deployed in time for the Summit of Head of States of the Commonwealth to be held in Uganda this November. ‘The deployment of the first 3G/UMTS network in Uganda will enable us to enhance our network coverage in terms of capacity and quality of service because of the useful new services we will be able to offer people throughout the country,’ said Abdulbaset Elazzabi, Managing Director of Uganda Telecom.

In a separate but related news story, Alcatel-Lucent also revealed that it has inked a deal worth USD100 million with Hits Telecom Uganda, a new regional operator that hopes to launch a GSM-based mobile network in November, also in time for the Summit.
