Fixed line licences cancelled

2 Aug 2007

The Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC) has cancelled licences of two start-up fixed line operators for failing to launch services. It also fined two other companies for their failure to increase subscriber capacity. ‘We cancelled the licences of Bashundhara and Dominix, as they did not start their operations,’ BTRC Chairman Major General (retired) Manzurul Alam told a private television channel yesterday. ‘Moreover, Dominix told us [BTRC] that they do not need the licence,’ he added. WiLL operators BanglaPhone and Bijoy Phone were issued with fines as they ‘could not increase their number of subscribers’.

Meanwhile, according to local TV news sources, up to five fixed line operators may get licences to operate in the central zone of the country, including Dhaka, where four new licences have reportedly been awarded in recent weeks.
