Econet plans 2008 launch

20 Jul 2007

Econet Wireless Kenya says it has had its cellular licence reinstated and it now has the go-ahead from the country’s telecoms regulator CCK to proceed with its GSM network rollout. Econet Wireless International Kenya won the auction for the country’s third GSM-900 licence in December 2003 but later had its licence suspended after a shareholder disagreement meant it was unable to pay the required fees. It now says it hopes to launch its first services in the first quarter of 2008, allowing it to compete with Safaricom and Celtel.
