Vodafone to continue UMTS900 tests

4 Jul 2007

Vodafone Portugal has been given the go-ahead to launch a wider trial of UMTS900 technology. The country’s telecoms regulator Anacom has approved a three-month technical trial which will run until September, Telecompaper reports. Vodafone has been testing 900MHz UMTS equipment for some time and in December last year carried out its first voice, video and data calls in a real working environment in the region of Castelo Branco. Vodafone says it plans to employ the technology to expand its 3G coverage to suburban and rural areas; UMTS900 can also be deployed to improve indoor 3G coverage in built-up areas.
