Struggling Puerto Rican cellco Movistar has been relaunched under the new name Open Mobile, reports BNamericas. The CDMA operator, formerly owned by Newcomm Wireless, a joint venture between US-based wireless operator Clearcom and Spanish telecoms giant Telefónica, filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in December 2006 as it struggled to compete in the island’s tough market of six mobile operators. The company was sold in March 2007 to US-based telecoms holding companies M/C Venture Partners and Columbia Capital for USD160 million. Open Mobile, which is the new legal name of the company as of 12 June, enters the market with 85,000 existing customers.
